Uncertainty in Human Health Risk Assessment
2015 Summer Workshops
The aim of the workshop was to identify, characterise and address key areas of uncertainty with a focus on developing improved approaches that can be applied to specific aspects of human health risk assessment. The workshop consisted of a series of presentations in the morning followed by discussion in the afternoon. The topics covered in the breakout sessions included:
- Conceptual Site Model
- Site Investigation
- Bioaccessibility
- Exposure

Chlorinated Solvents – Controlled Water and Human Health Risk Assessment
2014 Summer Workshops
Very few areas of the western world are completely free of chlorinated solvent contamination in groundwaters beneath heavily industrialised areas and DNAPL contamination remains one of the major challenges both from an investigation and risk assessment standpoint. This workshop was designed to bring together some of the UK leading experts in the field and to debate what is best practice in the investigation and assessment of risk from sites, and areas contaminated by chlorinated solvents and how best to approach the risk assessment of these sites, in relation to both controlled waters and human health. The workshop consisted of a series of presentations in the morning followed by discussion in the afternoon breakout sessions on the following topics:
- Site Investigation & Sampling
- Toxicology
- Groundwater risk assessment and developing guidance
- Assessment of vapour risk

Category 4 Screening Levels: Industry Application
2014 Spring Workshops (SoBRA / SAGTA)
Shortly after the publication of Defra’s research project on Category 4 Screening Levels (C4SLs), SoBRA and SAGTA held a joint workshop to discuss the implications of the research results and share views as to how best the results can be applied in practice. The workshop was well attended with over 120 attendees from both the public and private sector and consisted of a series of presentations followed by a chaired plenary discussion session.

Risks to Human Health from Asbestos in Soil
Summer 2013 Workshops
Quantification and management of the risks posed to human health from asbestos in soil are important current topics for practitioners dealing with land affected by contamination. The report from this workshop will be used to support the chapter on risk assessment in the forthcoming Joint Industry Working Group guidance on asbestos in soil. The workshop aims were to:
Support site investigation practice, laboratory analysis methods and examine risks to site workers; Evaluate remediation and re-use options; and Derive a decision algorithm for existing and future land users. The workshop followed the same format as previous SoBRA summer workshops with thought-provoking presentations in the morning followed by an afternoon of break-out session discussion groups.

Risk Assessment of Petroleum Hydrocarbons in Groundwater
Summer 2012 Workshops
Petroleum hydrocarbons are hazardous substances under the Groundwater Regulations and one of most the most common and problematic contaminants impacting groundwater resources. The workshop aims were to: Give the background on analytical and forensic methodologies for petroleum hydrocarbons and discuss how to take the most appropriate samples in site investigation; Examine the key issues in risk assessment modelling and vapour risk assessment; and
Present developments in policy covering Groundwater Regulations, Part 2a and ongoing initiatives. The workshop followed the same format as previous SoBRA summer workshops with thought-provoking presentations in the morning followed by an afternoon of break-out session discussion groups.

Lead Risk Assessment for Contaminated Land: The Key Issues
Summer 2011 Workshops
Lead is a widespread contaminant which is a key contaminant of concern at many sites. Currently there is much uncertainty in the approach to assessing the risks to human health from lead. This workshop aims were to identify the key uncertainties in the assessment of risks to human health from lead in soil; find where there is (and is not) consensus of opinion on how these uncertainties are best managed in the risk-based decision-making process; and provide recommendations for possible further research to address any outstanding issues. This workshop follows the same format as last year’s highly successful workshop with thought-provoking presentations in the morning followed by an afternoon of break-out session discussion groups.

Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs): The Burning Questions
Summer 2010 Workshops
PAHs are prevalent in soils in many urban areas of the UK and can arise from a variety of sources, including the historical legacy of burning coal. This workshop aims to: identify the key uncertainties in the assessment of risks to human health from PAH’s in soil; find where there is (and is not) consensus of opinion on how these uncertainties are best managed in the risk-based decision-making process; and provide recommendations for possible further research to address any outstanding issues. The event will be structured with thought-provoking presentations in the morning followed by an afternoon of break-out session discussion groups.
